The mission of the Studio for Interrelated Media is to conjure ambitious and unexpected experiences. It is to fail spectacularly, embrace chaos, invent new worlds, antagonize and enlighten, foster understanding and test limits. Every cohort shares the final challenge of redesigning the studio as a model for an alternative future. The event will take place on Thursday, December 5, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, in the Design and Media Center.⁠ ⁠ As an alum of the college and a special part of the MassArt community, we hope you'll join us for a warm reception and exhibition showcasing Ros’ sketches and paintings, followed by a screening of her film work and a Q&A session where you can learn more about her illustrious career.⁠ ⁠ Come and share in this tribute to a remarkable artist and educator. In 1968, Ros, along with her husband Harris Barron and Allan Finneran, co-founded and co-directed ZONE, a unique visual theater. ZONE enjoyed sold-out performances at Brandeis’ Spingold Theater and went on to tour 13 New York State SUNY campuses. In 1971, they were commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum to design and realize a major performance work based on the existing 1909 notes for Kandinsky’s never realized Der Gelbe Klange [The Yellow Sound] for the museum’s 1972 Kandinsky retrospective. Following this, WGBH offered Ros and Harris Rockefeller Artists-in-Television grants to experiment with new video technology. The video works she produced at the WGBH’s New Television Workshop independently demonstrate Ros' insatiable creativity and surrealist perspective. Ros and her husband, Harris Barron, had a remarkable impact on MassArt when they transformed their ZONE visual theater experiment into the Studio for Interrelated Media in 1969, which recently celebrated its 50th year. Ros taught painting for many years at UMass Boston and has enjoyed many awards and residencies throughout her life. At 91, Ros sketches daily and thinks of her sketched squares as windows, stages, or screens.​​​​​⁠ ⁠ Questions? Please contact Nita Sturiale nsturiale@massart.edu.

Join the SIM department for our annual show, this Join the SIM department for our annual show, this year “New Culture”, November 21st 2024! 7PM Gallery Walk 8PM Pozen Show The Studio for Interrelated Media emerged with the dematerialization of art, with students at the forefront of conceptual thinking, during the Vietnam War. Since then, we have created avant-garde and transgressive work, challenging ourselves and the world to feel something controversial. We aim to present neo-traditional ideals, forming art out of experience and adaptation to the modern world. From that, the work presented reflects the dual nature of construction and deconstruction, the idea of breaking a standard to make or find a better purpose. We live in a jungle; chaotic, uncertain, and brutal.
